Starting a young horse under the saddle

Updated: Jun 28

In this training plan we are working with a young horse and making the first steps under the saddle. This training will take you from tacking up and lunging sessions to your first loose ride.

Before you get started :

There are 3 important details that will detemine the success of starting your young horse.

  1. Getting your horse's hoofs ready for work (whether trimming or shoeing) and making sure they are feeling comfortable

  2. Getting the teeth done by a horse dentist to make sure that the bit will sit well in the mouth. I also recommend using a bit fitter to choose the right bit size and bit.

  3. Making sure that the saddle is fitting your horse. I recommend using a professional saddle fitter to do this.
